SUSTAERO is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Front End Loading 1 (FEL-1) engineering phase for its inaugural regional Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility. With the technical and economic feasibility of the project confirmed, the company has officially commenced FEL-2 engineering studies to define the detailed scope and configuration of the proprietary SOAR™ (Syngas Optimisation for Aviation Renewables) platform.

The completion of FEL-1, supported by the AME-UP grant and a team of specialised Canadian engineers, validated the core business case for the facility. The study confirmed that SUSTAERO’s regionalised model can economically deliver high-performance SAF from forestry residuals and green hydrogen while meeting the stringent carbon-intensity requirements of the global aviation sector.

"Advancing from FEL-1 to FEL-2 is a major step in our path to commercialisation," says Gillard. "The results of our initial appraisal confirm that the SOAR™ process is both technically viable and economically robust. We have successfully de-risked the fundamental integration of our biorefining technology, and we are now focused on the detailed engineering required to bring our first production site online."

The current FEL-2 phase involves narrowing the engineering scope to a specific site configuration, ensuring that the facility is optimised for its regional feedstock and existing industrial infrastructure. This stage is critical for establishing the final technical definitions required for project financing and equipment procurement.

"Our transition into FEL-2 engineering marks the beginning of a more intensive design phase," added Gillard. "By rigorously vetting our engineering requirements now, we are building a replicable template for regional industrial resilience. This progress ensures that SUSTAERO remains on track to provide a secure, sovereign supply of sustainable fuel for the Canadian market."
